Adventure Guides

The YMCA has a long history of bringing parents and children together for life enriching experiences. This history has left a legacy of strengthened relationships and close bonds in many families and communities across the country.

The elementary school years are a time of discovery and rapid learning. Children are beginning to see things differently as they grow and the YMCA wants to give parents a platform on which to stay close to their kids. We want to challenge our kids and learn new skills together, so why not do it as a family and with others?

This Parent & Child program is purposefully designed for both you and your children to grow as a family and to enjoy the great outdoors. The Adventure Guides is also a great place to make new friends with other kids and parents. It’s a place for kids to be kids and for parents to play right along with them. Originally based on strong traditions of the Native American Culture, this program embraces the core values of caring, honestly, respect, responsibility, and faith.

Join us for Trail Head Adventure Day on Saturday, Oct. 22 at YMCA Camp Twin Lakes!

Children ages 5–12 AND THEIR PARENTS are invited to take part in monthly activities & camp outs! Find out more about the year-round Adventure Guide program. “Friends Forever” is our motto!

Program Purpose:

“To foster understanding and companionship between parent and child.”

Program Motto:

“Friends Forever”

Program Pledge:

“We, YMCA Adventure Guides and Explorers, through friendly service to each other, to our family, to this Circle (or Expedition), and to our community, seek a world pleasing to the eye of Our Creator.”

Program Aims:

  1. To be clean in body and pure in heart
  2. To be friends forever with my dad/mom/son/daughter
  3. To love the sacred circle of my family
  4. To listen while others speak
  5. To love my neighbor as myself
  6. To respect the traditions and beliefs of all people
  7. To seek and preserve the beauty of Our Creator’s work in forest, field, and stream

Families are paired together into Circles with existing families that are a good match in ages of children and location. These Circles contain anywhere from 4 to 9 family groups. A handful of parents volunteer to lead the group in various leadership roles. The Circle meets monthly in a member’s home or at camp for fun activities including: camping skills, games, crafts, skits and competitions. Then there are Expedition Events where all Circles come together for: camping at State Parks, visiting Museums, doing community service projects, Swim parties and a Christmas dinner party.
